WD1002FAEX Unreadable after Windows 7 update

After a Microsoft update (3 successful, 1 failed), I can no longer access my D drive (1 TB SATA). OS is Windows 7 SP 1

I removed the drive, and put it in a USB holder, but still can’t access the drive. Windows wants to format the drive.

Are there any utilities available to check and possibly repair something that was damaged during the update?
