WD TVLive unable to do anything!

I have had this for nine months or so and it worked - after a fashion - with Windows XP and, later, under Seven.

I had to reinstall seven about three months ago and now I can’t get the Live to do anything at all!

I can connect to the internet (YouTube) but it says that any file I select on YouTube is “Unavailable at present”. I can “See” my computer as an icon, but if I try to access anything it says I have the wrong log-on information. If I try to reset this, it comes up with “Anonymous” as the log-on name and a blank password field. I then enter the username OK, but when I enter the password (eight characters) it always (and I mean for the last three months) presents me with the username I have entered plus a password field with sixteen charcters instead of the eight I entered! (Blobs of course, since the characters are hidden). So I can’t access any of my computer files.

I did an online upgrade a couple of days ago: it said the upgrade was successful but when I turned it on later it invited me to upgrade the firmware again.

Basically it is unusable except as a vehicle for USB stick files - which I can paly anyway on the Sony Bravia it’s connected to.

Ethernet connection to a Cisco Linksys router / Internet / HP Pavilion running W7.

Just a heads-up but the password field “blobs” do not indicate the number of characters within the password.  Regardless of the number of characters you use, it always shows the same number of chars (presumably for security).  That’s probably not the reason you can’t access the files.

Are you connecting via Media Server or Network shares?

After re-installing Win7, did you recreate your network shares the same way?

I’m very wary of online firmware upgrades.  Safest option is to download the zip from the WD site and place the firmware update on a USB flash drive and do it that way.

Many thanks.

I was completely unaware of the password issue - it doesn’t seem to be documented - and have spent many (un)happy hours setting and resetting the password as a result!

I am trying to see the Pavilion files from the network shares icon.

I still can’t get any YouTube files to play, even though I can see them onscreen. I have tried doing resets (little hole/button) and, as I said, updating the firmware to no effect.

Looking at the FAQs. I DO have Windows Live Sign-in Assistant (whatever that is…) installed - but the FAQs don’t say what to do about that!

Unfortunately there is a real problem for you now – you can try uninstalling Windows Live Assistant, but in many cases the only way to get rid of all the components is to roll back to a restore point before you got it installed in the first place.

You will need to do that to get net shares to work.

I have no idea when “sign-in assistant” was installed - it certainly wasn’t knowingly by me! (As usual, it was probably Micro$oft doing things to the computer “to make things easy”, which normally means something won’t work.)

Anyway, I have uninstalled it and will try connecting again when Mrs Datastream has finished watching the View…

No luck - same thing (Incorrect user or password").

So: no UTube or connectivity to my computer!

WDTvLive is now an expensive reader for USB sticks with .mpg files on them. Great…

Lets move back to the youtube problem. What firmware are you on now?

Go to Settings - System Settings - About. This should tell you your firmware version.

Is it still inviting you to update your firmware?

After any firmware update its advisable to:

reset via the side ‘paperclip’ button

reset to factory defaults via the internal System menu

unplug the unit from the power for some minutes (not seconds)

Do all 3 before using the unit again.

The network connection to your computer may be complicated but there is no reason why you should not be able to play youtube videos.

As to the network problem do you actually have a username / password set up on your computer shares?

If you do not then you leave the username as anonymous and the password field empty.

Many thanks - I did all you suggested and can now connect to YouTube (via my ethernet connection with LinkSys WAG 160N router) and also use my YouTube log-in.

I still can’t access any files on my computer , even though I can see the name of it (Study) onscreen. “Invalid name or password” - but I have carefully entered both again.

My firmware is 1.02.21, BTW.

Good, one down and one to go. (you have the latest official firmware)

In Network setting.

Turn ‘Auto Logon to Network Share’ to off

and also ‘Clear logon info for Network Share’

Now attempt to access a video / music file via network shares.

The logon screen will pop up.

Leave the username as ‘anoymous’ and the password blank.

Press OK

What happens now.

OK - done all that, the usual message “Invalid username or password” comes up.

Your only options at this point are to completely uninstall Live Sign-In Assistant, or Roll-Back to a restore point before it was installed.  The Add-Remove Programs window will tell you WHEN it was installed.

I did completely uninstall it a week or two ago in response to another helper!

What I can’t understand about this inability to see my computer files is that it was fine under XP, it was fine when I installed Seven but, after having to reformat and reinstall seven it doesn’t want to work. And it’s the same with my netbook - that can’t “see” anything on the main computer now, either. I’m baffled.

I have discovered the “Network and sharing centre” on my main computer (Named “Study”): if I allow access by turning OFF password protection then my TVLive CAN see the files, and play the .mpgs, .jpegs etc.

Turning password protection back on blocks the Live from seeing the files.

The problem is obviously in the network data. I set up my network under XP, using the LELA software supplied with the Linksys router I had bought, and set up in exactly the same way when I installed Seven: the network name was “Baraka” and the encryption key XXXXXXXX (not the real one!)

At some stage Seven seems to have also set up its own network - it tells me I have variously a “Homegroup” and a “Workgroup”! The trouble is - none of the names and passwords work with the Live!

The network NAME and ENCRYPTION KEY don’t have anything to do with each other.

If you turn ON Password-protected sharing, then you must have a password on your user account, and access the server using your User ID and Password that you log in with.  You must also make sure that the shares are available to that user that you’re logging in with.

I think you need to go read up on Windows 7.   HOMEGROUP is a new feature of Win7, and that has nothing to do with the WDTV.   Other Win7 clients can make use of Homegroups to make sharing “Simpler.”

OK. But I don’t “Log in” with anything - I switch my computer on and it boots up. I don’t have to enter a password or anything.

I have actually spent the last three months reading up on networking W7, but it’s absolutely impossible to understand - each bit leads to half a dozen references, and each of those to another haf a dozen until I have no idea what I’m looking for!  Because something has gone wrong with my netowrk, none of the things that I read I should do actually work.

What I really need to do is to delete every setting and network and start from scratch - but short of reformatting I can’t find a way this can be done - do you know how?

In your previous post, you said that if you turn password protected sharing OFF then everything works, then you said

Turning password protection back on blocks the Live from seeing the files.

Then in this LAST post you say you don’t use passwords at all, so that begs the question:  Why on Earth would you turn ON password protected sharing if you’re not using passwords??

If it works when you turn it off, then turn it off!  :)

Password protection was turned ON by default, I suppose - I had never even been aware of it until the other day when trying various options to “see” my files.

Thank you for the help as regards getting onto YouTube. I will persue the password problem on another site.

Thank you.

Yes, password protected sharing is the default.

I’m still trying to figure out what password problem you’re trying to solve?

I haven’t a clue what password or username it wants! I don’t log into my computer with a password, I set up (using LinkSys LELA program) a network  - and Live doesn’t seem to log on with *that*, and Windows seems to have set up something called Homegroup and also Workgroup, all of its own, and although I have the windows derived passwords for them *they* don’t work either!

Hence my query as to how I can delete all networks and start again from scratch…

It’s obviously not really to do with the Live box, but that does ask for username and password - and I don’t know what it wants!

You said previously, “if I allow access by turning OFF password protection then my TVLive CAN see the files, and play the .mpgs, .jpegs etc.”

If you turn OFF password protected sharing, then the default username of “Anonymous” and NO PASSWORD (blank) is what you use.

Homegroup is a feature of Windows 7.

“Workgroup” has been a normal part of every version of Windows since, well, Windows For Workgroups, circa 1994 or so.

You can’t delete those, they’re BUILT-IN.
