Wd tv live smp connecting to 1tb external hdd usb help

Want to connect my wd tv live smp via its usb at back to a 1tb hdd which is also wd one in an enclosure, but no luck,
Is it possible
And how do o do it
Want to put some movies
The wd smp is already connected to a nas on my network

What format are you usign for the HDD?
