WD TV Live Plus no Longer Connecting to Media Server

Hello,

I’ve had a WD TV Live Plus for a couple years now. it has always worked great.  i use it primarily to watch netflix on, but also have been using it to view files i have with a media server.

I run Ubuntu with Mediatomb as media sever. like i said, my WD had been working fine with this setup for awhile now.  i must’ve changed something or i don’t know what. because now it still can stream netflix fine, any other internet based app runs fine, but it will no longer connect to my media server.

now just to clarify, i also have a PS3. which also accesses the same media server and streams just fine. the ps3 will work, but the WD will not.

i have the latest firmware. have tried cycling power to modem, wd, router, computer, etc. i also have checked out my router settings, whcih appear fine.

the WD gives a ‘cannot connect to network’ error, or sometimes when accessing the mediatomb media server(which does appear under media servers on the WD, every time.) my WD has crashed and rebooted.

again netflix still works fine, but it wont access the media server that my ps3 can.

help!

Andrew

Seem to be  few of these media server issues on the forum of late with no solution…

Well, considering the time it’s been since the last fw update, it leaves only two possibilities:

1- The player has some sort of weird hardware failure.

2- Something else has changed on the user’s network or servers.

I spent the eveniing yesterday going through my network configuration.  There are no settings on the router which have changed.  All settings are at default except for a few static IP addresses I have set up for other devices on my network.  The WDTV Live has been reset to factory settings.  I unplugged the WDTV from the power supply and removed the ethernet cable.

When switching the box back on, it locked up.  I had to unplug the power supply again.  When I plugged it back in, it managed to find its way to the home menu.  I reset the network settings using automatic.  Clicking on the music icon and then media servers caused the WDTVLive to report “Device not connected to the network”.  I then navigated to the shared folders icon under Music and was able to connect to my DS212…but I was still unable to connect to the media server on my DS212!

When I switched on my laptop I could see the media server it hosts as available on the WDTV Live under Music | Media servers.  Using Windows Media Player on my laptop, I was able to connect to the media server running on my DS212.

I just don’t get it.  For some reason the WDTVLive just cannot see the Media Server on my DS212 despite the fact it is there and despite the fact it used to work a matter of weeks ago.

Did you update the Synology firmware in the last few weeks?  Maybe they updated something in their media server package that the WD doesn’t like?

Yes, I the media server package was updated recently.  I think something has changed so that the uPNP on the wdtv live is unable to discover the media server on the DS212.  I have said as much to the Synology help desk but they have yet to reply.
