Wd tv live media player, it sees the files but doesnt play

i recently gave my wd tv live media player to my brother and when i connect the hard drive to it i can see the video file and go to it but once i click on it to play it takes me back to the starting view of the media player. anyone seen this before and have any suggestions?

Probably coded in a newer video codec that this player doesn’t recognize. Time to upgrade.
