Wd tv live hub impression

Just got it today.

A little dissapointed that i have to pay for 1 TB of storage that i dont need.

I have a 2 TB NAS in use.

The fan is noisy.

The internal disc has no spindown option.

You cannot remove the internal HDD.

The device gets pretty hot.

No way to shut down the indexing service.

Dear WD people.

Go back to basics and dont make it a "Vista"like machine.

Let the user be the admin and not the software.

I would like to see.

Shutdown or spindown for the internal storage.

Fan control.

Choice to index service yes or no.

Weather service for Europe and not USA only. Country selection.

Thanks from Holland.

Its a media hub and the storage is part of that hub.

If you press the remote standby for more than 3 seconds the fan etc will stop and the unit will go into a deeper standby.

The device gets warm and thats why the fan is on.

If you open up the hub (not recommended) you could obviously remove the disc. However the disc is also used to store various files used by the hub.

You can stop the indexing by turning the media library off.

If you input the complete name for your town and if its in the Accuweather database then you will see it somewhere under the USA towns.

If you don’t need the internal storage, perhaps a WD HD Live would have been a better choice?

The fan should not be TOO noisy.  But it’s subjective, so hard to tell.  You may have a bad fan.

The device should barely get warm.   So if yours is getting HOT, then maybe the fan IS bad.

I just sold my WD live because of the limited LAN bandwith.

I have a Gigabit network and i want to use it.

If there was a WD Live with Gigabit then i would sell the hub again.

If possible i would remove the hdd and replace it for a small flash drive and remove the fan.

Is it possible to open the hub without damage ?

Thanks.

I have Accuweather in my LG tv also and it is very limited.

It appears that even though the hub has a gigabyte port its limited internally by the chip / firmware.

Have you found your town yet.

Yes, do not make your purchase decision on the “gigabit” port - you will not see that speed in real life…or anything close for that matter.

Yes i have found my city in accuweather.

I had to put in the complete name before it showed up in the list.

It didnt recognise a part of my city name.

So that is solved.

Today i have tried the LAN speeds on my network.

From PC to NAS i reach 103MB speeds.

From PC to WD Hub the speed doesnt go over 11 MB Upload average.

Downloading doesnt go over 8MB average.

So wtf. did they build in Gigabit ?

It is completely useless.

No fun to upload some Blue Ray content to your device.

The only good thing till now is that the menu is a lot faster , you can select your own wallpapers , and the movie loads a little bit faster.

My overall conclusion is that it is very dissapointing .

Work on the LAN speeds WD.

Full HD content can reach 15MB or higher over the network…so start working and solve this problem.

Can we open the device without damage and put the 1 TB hdd to gooed use in my NAS ?

not any standard I’ve ever heard of… Standard bluray is about a third of that.

Yes that can be frustrating but I tend to set it up to copy overnight. Does take a few nights admittedly to get the collection building up.
