WD TV HD and playback of large files

hi guys, i own a WDTV HD 1080P Media Player, which i connect to a WD 2TB MyBook Studio Edition II for viewing movies on an HD tv, most of the video files are avi and size below 2GB, the playback is fine.

recently i’ve started viewing video files over 2GB, in some cases the sound cuts out intermittently and also the video stutters, MP4 and MKV formats in all cases.

playing back the same 2GB+ files from a wd passport on a PS3 - video and sound is perfect.

do i need to upgrade my hardware or software ???

i prefer viewing video files through WD devices as it supports .SRT files.

Welcome to the forum.

Can you provide some more info about your setup? E.g.

  • WD TV Live or Live Plus?
  • Firmware version?
  • MediaInfo output for one of the problem files?

i’m in the UK, this is the model i own:

Ah.  Looks like you have a one of the older models.  This forum is for the newer Live / Live Plus models, so the firmware (and associated bugs) are not the same.

The forum to post in is this one:

ok thanks.

but i’d like to know about the above file, will it play fine on a WD TV Live as i’m interested in it

I don’t see any cause for concern in the MediaInfo output, the file seems ok. Should work fine on one of the newer models. You could always try remuxing the file to MKV with MKVmerge GUI; remuxing only takes a minute or so (and you can embed the SRT into the MKV), and may get the MP4 files working on your existing hardware. Cheaper than trying a new player.
