WD Sync Installer quit unexpectedly! (Mac OSX El Capitan)

This has been mentioned in other threads as well but since there was no official answer from WD. I created a new one in hope that somebody sees it!

I can’t install WD Sync on my mac and it is essential part for my usecase, please show me a work around to install it or fix the installer. Whenever I run the installer I get the following error:

If your on the local network and won’t be syncing remotely then go with a third party sync program like Free File Sync while you wait for WD to hopefully fix what ever the problems are between their software, the My Cloud and Apple’s El Capitan .

No in local network I can easily map my drive. The problem is when I want to have remote access from outside of my network which requires the wd sync to be installed.

While the official way of remote syncing a computer with the My Cloud requires the use of the WD Sync program, there are various unofficial workarounds to the issue ranging from using the WebDAVMod to remote map the My Cloud, to setting up a VPN tunnel, to using the insecure FTP (or some form of secure FTP), when using third party sync programs. Each method has its own potential issues.

Hi existme, I had the same problem until I saw your “debug dump”. You’re right to question that the problem is due to:

The clue was the “withFont:” part, so I checked with Font Book and Arial was OFF. I switched Arial ON and the installer worked immediately! The first window that the installer opens uses… Arial

Excellent finding Stephan! I knew that the problem should be as easy as a missing font but I didn’t have a clue what could be missing. I am really interested to know how did you find out that Arial is the missing piece?

Unfortunately my mac is not available until Monday so I can’t really try it but I am sure that your answer is correct so I mark it as the solution.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the ‘just works’ Mac had an installer that looked at the resources being requested by an installer, and made sure those resources were available, and, if they weren’t (for instance, because a font has been disabled in its ‘Font Book’), it enabled the required font…?

Or that gave an intelligible, user-friendly error message…

I had already installed the software on my iMac where it was working perfectly, so I opened Font Book on both Macs and noticed Arial was enabled on the iMac, but disabled on my MacBook Pro where I was having the problem.
I’ve come across this problem with other software before, usually software that has been originally designed for use on Windows (which has a larger user base than Mac), where Arial is usually the default sans font of choice, then ported for use on the Macintosh platform.

now. It was definitely Arial being disabled.

Hi, my WD Sync Installer is also quitting unexpectedly.

As Stephen suggested, I looked at the Font Book, and Arial is enabled. So the problem must be somewhere else in my case.

Hi, I am having the same issue, apart from I checked the fonts, Arial is on and the installer starts.

But after the installer asks for permissoin the blue bar goes all the way to the end and then it crashes. Nothing is installed as far as I can tell.

Anyone else have this exact issue?

Got the same problem and already tried activating arial but didnt help. Would be happy with any ideas how to install wd sync. Thanks in advance, PM

Have a search through the forums for Sync, and see how many problems there are. e.g. the thread that was below yours:

And then ask yourself: “Do I really want to install this…?”

And if the answer is ‘no’, then take a look at the alternatives that are regularly suggested.

freesync and rsync, for the win!

OSX has command line rsync right from the start, but there is also a graphical front end for it.

the MyCloud DOES do rsync over ssh after enabling ssh, without any further configuration. I tested a few hours ago before work. Successfully pulled a test directory I created for that purpose. Rsync works in all 3 directions (To NAS, From NAS, and Sync with NAS), depending on how you wrangle the command line options, and the MyCloud responds to all circumstances correctly as far as I can tell.

I would strongly suggest using rsync. Not only is it a well known program and method, with lots of community documentation-- it also does intelligent transfers with on-the-wire compression, and delta-only updates, meaning it is very efficient and fast.

Thanks for the tips. I did not find Arial in my font book. So I downloaded and installed the Arial font from Arial font free download - FreeFontsPro.com. Reinstalled WD Sync by WD Sync Uninstaller and WD Sync Installer. It now works well.
