WD Sentinel DX4000 "Startup field 0xd9" and then "Bad Storage"

Hi,

Gramps is fully correct, if you are not even able to boot the DX4000 then the RST driver is completely useless and most likely the only solution is to try on a different PC the utilities mentioned with your hard drives.

When you mean “recovering” are you really using the full Windows Server re-install option of the DX4000? This is the one which requires a 16 Gb USB2 stick (USB3 won’t work… yet another funny issue of this unit).

In general when I had sever issues this option almost always worked paying of course attention to select the option which does not completely wipe the HD content.

He says he got “Loading Recovery” on the LCD, so I think he has a good thumb. I have no clue what the 4th drive may have done to his raid config so again I think his best bet is to do a 3rd party thing.

After he gets his data back he could then build the box fresh with the 3 drives if the 4th is not a perfect match and do the RST thing.

But one step at a time

Dear All
i need your help , my old drive full now and replace it with new one 3TB Hard drive (WD3009FYPX-09AAMB0) but its still show “Config BAD” when i make recovery . please can you help me .

I have a similar but different issue - a PERFECTLY good running DX4000, all good drives (somewhat new right from WD on a replacement unit)

I want to sell the unit (have 2, selling both, going with rackmount setups) - so I went to do the factory restore and after the basic initializing recovery messages (so it is recognizing my USB key just fine) I get the BAD MEDIA message and can’t continue.

I forced a drive VERIFY and all is JUST FINE, but I can’t do the factory restore.

Any ideas, greatly appreciated.

UPDATE - I followed the below procedure - HOPING, but same result

Remove drives one by one from DX4000 and test them in Disk Management using the portable USB enclosure. Every drive should have unallocated space with the size of drive, like a new drive. If it does not, remove all volumes and all partitions from it. One volume is hidden and cannot be deleted from Disk Management. In this case use DISKPART and run these commands
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK
LIST PARTITION
SELECT PARTITION 2
DELETE PARTITION OVERRIDE
SELECT PARTITION 1
DELETE PARTITION OVERRIDE
QUIT

Diskpart
select disk
clean

will erase the drive(s) also. I would suggest you get a new thumb drive if you MD5 Hash matches

Dear Daniel,

Could you post the full model number of the drive which you can read on the unit? Because if it is not in the original list of the WD software I think there is nothing to do. You can very likely use them as replacement drives but not as the original ones to be used for install. This at least till WD will release a patch to allow usage of not recommended drives also for installation and not only for replacement of an existing unit.

Instead if your drive is in the list then just follow Gramps advice, in my case I had succesfull install also after having converted the drives to GPT on another workstation. Then I used the USB key for storage raid create and then the other USB to be used for the full recovery.

More info - attempted to do RECREATE STORAGE instead of the full reset - interestingly it comes up with BAD DRIVE COUNT as if it see 3 drives and not 4. All lights blue.

ONLY indication of something wrong - when the device FIRST starts up, the drive lights 1 time flash RED - all except location 3 gets no light. If I move drives around, still the same, slot 3 … starting to think the WD-replaced cage may be no good although it works FINE … the restore is the only thing I can’t do,

I actually did try 2 other USB keys (thinking it could be the key) and same results. Will try your suggestion on the CLEAN and see what happens

I had a bad unit replaced by WD they sent with “all new refurbished” drives, I didn’t replace any of them.
When the box came new about 6 months ago I was able to do the initial install no problem - and it was running fine other than trying to do the restore to wipe clean to sell it … trying to give as much background as I can

I had an older ISO, was in process of downloading 1_7_5_17 … looks like you found a newer one - will get that instead!!!

got a page not found on the link

Will try the convert to GPT … that has solved issues on other systems for me

NEW RESULT - after I noticed my red-light issue and swapped drives around - and don’t “think” any other changes, now I get INVALID CONFIG … different, maybe getting someplace. Going to try the GPT thing now

THANKS EVERYONE … in this field 37 yrs … and LOVE when I need my own help and actually get it

If you post the model no. of your hard drives then we can check whether you have chances or not. I would advise t start with 2 drives only, then you have time to add them later on. And you should use 1.7.6.21 which has wider drive compatibility

Quick note - when I did CLEAN (diskpart), disk manager then had an “offline” indicator and says “not initialized”… I actually like that, change may be good … (just writing notes as I go so I don’t forget) … 1st try “INVALID CONFIG” … I call that getting someplace, but not sure if USB key or drives it doesn’t like … recreated key …

I just finished downloading 1_7_5_17 so will recreate keys with it … I haven’t been able to find 1.7.6.21 … any good link is greatly appreciated

O/T but worth a quick share - have a Thermaltake 2-drive external box on USB3 … very convenient for all this, don’t have to install drives into anything to work on them, just drop in a slot so makes much of this go a lot faster. Nice little (CHEAP) device. This and an Apricorn SATA cable for doing perfect disk to disk copies (of bootable systems) … 2 lifesaver tools to own.

The 1.7.6.21 download link is below. I fixed the TechNet link.
You need to clean all your drives with diskpart, then do recreate storage (the middle step). You have to make a new thumb drive each time for this one.

When that is done look on the thumb drive for the log file. Go to the end and make sure it makes sense.
If all is well proceed to recover, the bottom step. If you think Bay 3 is funky, I would clean all my drives, but just put two drives in and do the recreate, then recover. After that you can try adding more drives.

I just got a DX4000 minus its drives and set about to recreating the storage and recovering the operating system. However, as I found out (and as many have found out) it’s not so easy, because WD has imposed a “whitelist” of approved drives to use with this server. And you get all these errors “0xd9”, “bad storage”, “invalid number of drives” because the DX4000 is rejecting your drives!

I got a pair of WD4002FYYZ (specifically, “WD4002FYYZ-01B7CB1”) and of course I got all these errors, and more.

Following Gramps’ advice, I loaded up the recovery.log file that had been generated on the USB stick, and to my surprise I found these entries:

2019.02.03 04:06:09 - INFO - RaidCfg64 detected 2 drives
2019.02.03 04:06:09 - INFO - RaidCfg64 drive K7JY***L: port=2

2019.02.03 04:06:09 - INFO - Frozen: 0

So then I thought, “what whitelist??” HERE is the whitelist, according to recovery.log:

2019.02.03 04:06:01 - DEBUG - Reading resource file 'C:\wdrecovery\Locale\en_US.xml'
2019.02.03 04:06:02 - DEBUG - Parsing whitelist 'C:\wdrecovery\whitelist.xml'

Note that this C:\ directory structure is the root of the USB key that you have to create to perform “recreate” and “recovery”.

So now it is a simple matter to add my brand-new RE drives to this whitelist, and work flawlessly this time!

I made the “recreate” USB key again, this time I went to the WDRECOVERY directory and sure enough found these files:

WHITELISTK.XML
WHITELISTS.XML

Opened up each of these in Notepad, and here’s the relevant section:

<WhiteList>
<!-- Draco/Draco_RE -->
<Model description="Enterprise Storage 2 TB" size="1907730" etype="constant">WDC WD2002FYPS-02W3B0</Model>
<Model description="Enterprise Storage 2 TB" size="1907730" etype="constant">WDC WD2002FYPS-02W3B1</Model>
<Model description="Enterprise Storage 2 TB" size="1907730" etype="constant">WDC WD2009FYPX-09AAMB0</Model>
<Model description="Enterprise Storage 3 TB" size="2861589" etype="constant">WDC WD3009FYPX-09AAMB0</Model>

To which I added this very line, to both files:

<Model description="Enterprise Storage 4 TB" size="3815448" etype="constant">WDC WD4002FYYZ-01B7CB1</Model>

I had to go “file-properties” first and change the two XML files from “read only”, so that I was able to save back to the USB key. Then after the update, I changed back to “read only”, just in case the software checks that status as yet another ERROR condition.

But anyway, it "recreated’ my drives. Wow, success! Then I did the “recovery” procedure, edited the USB key again in the same way (because of course it checks another time), and it worked that time too!

So seems like you just have to do some undocumented editing and you can probably get any set of drives you want to work on the DX4000.

And I also saw this other post that describes all the same procedure from 2015, because of course somebody else figured it out:

Great work!
Thanks for posting

So I had a power-outage that left my box starting with the 0xD9.
Came across some recovery info.
https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5060/kw/WD%20Sentinel%20DX4000
Then after step10. I get the USB recovery going…to find that it now says Bad Storage. When it was just working few days ago. I do know I swap a bad HDD with a WD NAS RED PRO that was not on the whitelist.

Worked out fine.
So I came across this page, and saw Grunchy post. Do I have the same problem and how do I fix my unit?

Here is my recovery log.
