WD-RED (WD8005FFBX-68CAKN0) invalid SMART checksum

Hi all,

I’ve installed four fresh WD-RED 8TB and all of them have same error:

Warning! SMART Attribute Thresholds Structure error: invalid SMART checksum.

OS default version of smartctl v7.2 show the same.
I wasn’t able to find any documentation about these error:
“Warning! SMART Attribute Thresholds Structure error: invalid SMART checksum.”
Does anybody know why it can occur?

I expect it’s a benign firmware bug.

You can save the 512-byte SMART data block to a text file using CrystalDiskInfo. Select Edit → Copy Option from the menu and tick all the boxes. Then select Edit → Copy to capture all the data to the clipboard. Now type Ctrl-C to paste the clipboard contents into your next post.

You can use Function → Hide Serial Number if you need to.

I’ll calculate the checksum for you.

You could probably do a similar thing with smartmontools, but I don’t have the instructions handy.

Here is an example:

Did you buy these New or "Refurbished/Renewed/what.ever.else.they.call.used?

I use USB boxes for hard disks and even after 30,000 hours they are still fine

My recent 5 disk box has USB-C which makes it easier to move data as needed.
