WD RED & QNAP Standby

Hello,

I’m an happy owner of 4 WD RED 3TB installed in a QNAP Station.

My QNAP has a HDD standby function that can be activated that essentially turns off the HDDs after a configurable amount of inactivity minutes.

Since the WD RED are HDD designed for 24/7 activity, with built-in energy saving features (this is what I’ve read on WD product page), I’m wondering if the QNAP standby function could harm the WD RED disks.

Is better turn off this function, leaving always on the drives, or leave it on and let the drives be turned on and off continuously?

I’m not worried about power consumption, I’m worried for the HDD’s lifetime.

What you suggest?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Since the WD Red already have power saving features, it will be up to you to enable the feature that would turn off the drives completely.  Turning the drives off when not in use will definitely extend its lifespan, but turning them on and off continuously on a short period of time could damage your drives.
