I am looking to buy used WD Red drives for my Synology Nas. I am becoming familiar with Nas and the type of drives to use.
With that said, I see WD Red that says NASware on it. I have seen drives that say NASware, NASware 2.0 and 3.0. I am not sure of the difference between them. I am guessing NASware is some type of firmware or technology that is built-in to the drive.
WD Red drives use SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) and are not “optimal” for use in a NAS. You should look at drives that use CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording)
WD Red Plus and WD Red Pro use CMR. You can also use Seagate IronWolf drives as well as others. Check the specs on any drive that interests you to verify CMR.

Be aware that Synology will have a “compatibility” list of verified drives. Just note the “disclaimer” they have regarding “limited support”.

Why are you wanting to buy used drives? Are you being given any type of warranty or guarantee that they will work for a certain period of time?
