I’m looking at purchasing a WD Red 10TB drive to be used in a external HDD case. This will then be connected to a RaspberryPi via USB to act as a Wireless NAS. Does anyone know if the Red drives can be used as a normal drive, or are they only compatible with NAS hardware?

A second drive and RPi will be used as a backup, along with a second drive eventually on the primary RPi in a mirror configuration.

They can be used as an ordinary drive. Keep in mind, though, that drives intended for NASes tend to be more expensive and noisier than desktop drives like the Green. If noise isn’t an issue, then you’re in good shape.
