all threads re netflix for wdtv live have bunch of users defending why WD is doing it this way but I have a feeling that they are nothing but misinformed fanboys.

Hehe. Yeah us ‘misinformed fanboys’ don’t know anything, we’re just making stuff up, don’t believe ANYTHING you read in here

I really don’t think you are right, but WD could give persons who bought the WD TV Live in the past three or four months a trade in for the so called new WD TV LIve PLus.  That is too easy though to keep satisfied customers.

No matter what anyone says they will not change their policies to make happy customers.

I feel this is the biggest thing any company could do to hurt what was an incredible reputation.  This has stopped me from buying any more WD products and would not recommend any of their products to anyone.

I do not understand how they could even think aboutmaking this decision.

Well, heck, I might as well throw my two cents in here…

Raybug, there is an idea posted in the ideas lab that you can vote on to give users a rebate on their WD TV Live for a Live Plus.

dk922, Netflix will never be added to the WD TV Live.  The chipset does not support copy protection.  There, you’ve heard it from a WD rep.

Well, if it makes you more confident and feel any better, this is my handle on the homebrew forum, you can read about all technical work I did on the WDTV homebrew in threads like these, where for example I created the foundation for the current native framerate playback plugin:  http://forum.wdlxtv.com/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=167#p1043

Or google what I did on the xbox 360:  http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=xbox+360+thespecialist

I think you’ll conclude I do have SOME idea what I’m talking about

So if I buy a new computer from Dell and they release a new system the next day, I should be able to trade in my old one and get a reduction on the new one ?

Of course I do understand your frustration but come on, maybe you should be a little bit reasonable as well. Technology advances, what you buy today is old tomorrow.

What I have decided to do is wait for internet TV in the fall and have everything covered.  Get away from the all the minor devices.

No comment to the man who has more money than brains.

It’s during this time that we should all remember: Caveat emptor.

What sorta ■■■■■ IMO is that there are software solutions that can be applied to take care of the macrovision. It would require some reworking of the basic code of the device, but it could be done. WD chose instead to release a new version with a hardware solution instead of releasing a new software solution for the existing hardware. I can’t swear that the hardware in the Live is capable of handling a software encryption/decryption solution, but I do know such tech exists.

I wish I had held off a couple of months. Not gonna buy a brand new device just to incorporate Netflix when my PlayOn provides that functionality to the existing WD TV Live. I do know, however, that going forward I’m not going to be supporting WD at least as regards media streaming devices.

I’m getting a bit tired of this. I explained a million times on this board: there is NO LINUX software  decoder for the Netflix stream available. And FYI: it’s NOT encrypted with macrovision, it’s encrypted with a microsoft propiatery algorithm.

Anyway, interesting developments on a sidenote, this is what Popbox just mentioned on their site:  “This version of the PopBox does contain the required hardware security and other mechanisms to fulfill premium content providers application requirements in the future.”

This explains the popbox issue I mentioned earlier. Popbox either is switching to 8642 (that has the needed security SoC, just like the 8654 in the WDTV plus+) or they added some extra hardware that features it. So we can scratch the theory that there were ‘secret’ software developments’

OK.  I read the chain.  I’m convinced that’s it’s a hardware - chipset - issue.  So, let’s have happy customers,  give up a coupon for my new HDLIVE PRO - 50% off with POP of a HDLIVE.  I also read the support chains about current delivery of NETFLIX.  Sounds like I can be patient for the next firmware update.  Take your time.  Do the right thing…

Yeah, and I want Apple to give me 50% off an iPhone4 (darn iPhone3 – doesn’t do HALF the things the new one does).

I’m with you 100%.

Since this got resurrected, FWIW, Sigma appears to call all the DRM versions of their chips the “Macrovision” version,  despite the fact that they support numerous DRM schemes (and the non-Macrovision versions don’t support any DRM).

It still comes down to the fact that a “non-Macrovision” chip, like in the Live, will not be able to play DRM-protected streams, no matter what type of DRM it is.  DRM playback can not be added to a Live.  A Live Plus is necessary for DRM content.  That’s why it came as a new version with a new chip instead of just a firmware upgrade.

The original Live was never advertised as supporting Netflix; WD really don’t owe you or other Live owners anything. The time to offer rebates to Live owners was months ago, which didn’t happen. It’s not going to happen.

Since we know it’s not going to happen, we might as well put an end to being able to resurrect this old dead dog.
