WD photo app runs too slow

Hi, I have just purchased a 3TB MyBookLive after the family’s ever-expanding libary of digital photos maxed out the pc’s hard disk.

The major selling point for me was the WD Photo app for ipad which I understood would allow me to browse the MyBookLive library on the ipad anywhere in the house and give me instant access to all the photos (e.g so kids could show granny their latest pics when she comes round etc.).

I have installed the drive, upgraded firmware and installed the app on the ipad. Browsing is painfully slow - on average 10 to 20 secs to open a picture - if it finds it at all - many attempts to open a file time out to a 660 file not found error after 60 secs or so.

This makes it useless for casual browsing and slideshows etc. on the ipad (unless you cache the photos beforehand which kind of defeats the object).

I am testing on a small library of 200 photos or so - and have given the drive several days to catalogue and resize the photos. My home broadband speed is about 6Mbps.

WD phone support appear unfamiliar with the app and have not been able to help so far. Is there anything obvious I could try to improve the speed? Or is that the best I am going to get.

Any help/hints would be greatfully appreciated.

I don’t know what to suggest other than to tell you that 20 seconds to open a file is definately NOT the norm.   For me it’s 1-3 seconds … anywhere in the world.

I just got my MBL a couple of days ago…

I *thought* the Photo app used the MioNet mechanism. If so then you need to take into

consideration that the data path probably goes from the MBL to MioNet and then down

to your iPad.

My ISP give me 4~6 mbs down but only 350 kbs up!

This could easily translate to slow load times.

You might try directly connecting to twonky when you are home ( http://mbl:9000).

You can view pics from twonky…

I don’t think it’s using MioNet, but I believe the process is pretty much the same…

The iPxd is connecting to a portal in WD’s network, and the portal is connecting to the MBL as a go-between.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the info.

I guessed my internet connection speed might be part of the issue (just checked and am getting 800 kbps upload) but even so surely something else is going on.

I’ve just noticed that there is a dedicated WD photo forum elsewhere in the community so I will post on there and see if someone has a magic bullet. Otherwise it’s back to the phones and trying to find a support tech who can help.

Thanks again.
