WD Passport problem

Hi.

I have two WD external 2.5" disks:

WD Passport Ultra 2TB and WD Passport 4TB

Both drives are working flawlessly on my HP notebooks, but I have problems on my desktop computer based on Intel Z97 - Asrock Z97M Pro4.

WD Passport Ultra 2TB is working great but when I connect WD Passport 4TB computer recognizes it but I hear metal sound clicking and I cannot read anything from disk. It seems like disk has not enough power. I swaped USB3 cables between disks but nothing changes.

How could it be that Ultra is getting enough power on same USB port on same computer? Maybe problem is with chipset, firmware or drivers?

Hi,

It is recommended to avoid USB hub and directly connect the drive directly to an available USB port on the rear of the cabinet, try changing USB ports to isolate the issue.

As Suggested by @Jonty.S, try changing the USB port to fix the issue.

I managed to solve my problem. Problem is WD Passport which has higher power demands, as I suspected. I bought USB3 hub with its own power supply and now disk works great. Obviously WD Passport Ultra was much better engineered product not hogging for power.
