WD MyCloud 6TB blue light blinking and not working

I have a WD MyCloud 6TB and it doesn’t work.
When I turn it on I can access it via the web, it shows me checking file consistency. After a minute, it no longer lets me access it via the web.
The blue light keeps flashing, and even though I’ve left it on for more than 20 days, it doesn’t change status and it’s still not accessible.
I’ve tried resetting it from the reset button (40 seconds) but it’s still the same.
I’d like to know if you can think of any solution, or if by removing the disk there’s any way to recover the data by connecting it directly to a computer with a SATA>USB adapter (I’ve tried connecting it to my Ubuntu computer and I see a disk with an unknown 2TB partition, nothing else!)
Thank you very much!

@zak_3
What WDMYCLOUD device do you own? Do you know if it’s a 1st or 2nd generation device and what OS it uses, OS3 or OS5?

This is what I own. I have two devices, a 1st generation with OS3 on Home Network only, and a 2nd generation with OS5.

@zak_3, if you haven’t done so already use the forum search feature (magnifying glass icon top right) to search for blinking blue front LED. A number of people have had the issue over the years. Its possible there may be suggestions in those earlier discussions. Example search:
https://community.wd.com/search?q=blinking%20blue%20led%20%23os-5%3Amy-cloud-os5

If you can access the My Cloud Dashboard it may provide additional details in the Diagnostic section, and or the log files (found under the help menu).

One can run a Disk Check from the My Cloud Dashboard > Settings > Utilities page. Such a test may provide additional information.

But in the end, if the drive is damaged or going bad one may try extracting the drive from the My Cloud enclosure, connecting it to a computer running Linux using a powered USB to SATA adapter (or spare desktop computer SATA connector & power rail), then seeing if they can extract the drive contents from the user data partition. And or run disk or data recovery programs against the extracted hard drive.

Sorry for my English, I use a translator.

  1. cat0w, I don’t know if it’s 1Gen or 2Gen, the P/N is WDBCTL0060HWT
I was using OS5, although now I can’t log in by IP and I can’t confirm it

  2. I’ve tried to fix it by following a youtube tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OrtHp4eGKI) but it hasn’t been possible. It goes into Safe Mode and when trying to update the Firmware it doesn’t do anything else.

  3. When I unmounted the disk and connected it through a SATA>USB adapter it didn’t work for me, but I connected it directly inside the CPU and there I can see the partitions without problems (with Ubuntu) and I’m saving all my data to another WD MyCloud Home unit that I bought. So the data recovery problem is solved!

  4. When I’m done saving the data, I’ll make one last attempt following this website to repair the current disk (https://fox-exe.ru/WDMyCloud/WDMyCloud-Gen1/Replace%20HDD%20-%20English.txt)

Thank you very much for the answers!!

Does that P/N value on the bottom of the single bay My Cloud end with a “-00” or “-10”?
P/N: WDBCTLxxxxxxx-00 means its first generation single bay My Cloud OS3 running FW 04.xx.xx. OS3 My Cloud units are end of support by WD.
P/N: WDBCTLxxxxxxx-10 means its second generation single bay My Cloud that is capable of running OS5 v5.xx firmware

The directions to “unbrick” a second generation single bay My Cloud are different than those used to “unbrick” a first generation single bay My Cloud. Different files and different steps are used for the second gen single bay My Cloud. Second gen example unbrick:

If you have shares on your device, try the following, be sure to use the name you gave your device and the name of the share or file you want to look at.

Example: \\WDMYCLOUD\JohnShare

I have Windows 11 Pro 24H2 and place the address into File Explorer address bar.

Thank you very much Bennor
I didn’t know how to identify the generation of my MyCloud
It ends in -10, so it’s second generation with OS5 v5.xx
Thanks to you for letting me know, otherwise I would have followed the manual for generation 1.

I’ll try it when I finish copying all my data.

Let’s see if I can get it, thank you very much!!

I can’t access the shared resource, neither by entering the name nor the IP, I have tried it from Ubuntu and from Windows 11 that I have on the same network at home.
Thanks for the links, I had already read them but I haven’t been able to solve it with them.

Since I’m already recovering the data, I still have to try the link that Bennor gave me to repair the disk

Bennor, I followed the manual you gave me.
I did all the steps, put the disk back in the box and when I turned it on the red light flashed, indicating that it was in Recovery mode. So far so good.
Now is when I have to update the firmware.

This is where I have the problem, on the page it shows me I don’t see anything in “Firmware version”, I choose the .bin file and the wheel turns and turns, but it doesn’t update it. It doesn’t go past that point.
I have tried with the file downloaded from the link you gave me (My_Cloud_GLCR_2.31.204.bin) and also with two others downloaded from the WD page (My_Cloud_GLCR_2.42.115.bin and WDMyCloud_5.29.102_prod.bin)

Tested from different browsers (Firefox, Edge and Chrome) and from different computers (Windows and Ubuntu)

Any ideas?
Thank you very much for reading me

Sometimes one has to perform the unbrick steps more than once. If you have created the partitions and formatted them as the directions indicate, do not change any of the values to match your drive size. Use the values the directions indicate.

If you haven’t done so already search the forums as others have had similar issues when they unbricked a second gen single bay My Cloud and got stuck at the firmware update point.

Solved!!!

I did the following:
Connect the disk directly to a Sata port on my Kubuntu computer
From the KDE partition manager I deleted all the partitions, leaving the disk empty and unpartitioned.

I removed the disk, connected it to the box, and did the same procedure again that I had done before via Telnet:
https://fox-exe.ru/WDMyCloud/WDMyCloud-Gen2/_Unbricking_en.txt

The Firmware update worked and I was able to enter the dashboard

I had one more problem, since I didn’t see any volume, I restarted the disk and changed the RAID mode to JBOD
With this everything works perfectly for me now.

Thank you all very much for your contributions, they are appreciated!!!
