WD MyBook Premium II 2TB Black - Hard Drive Upgrade

I have searched the net and I see a lot of posts and ideas for a lot of different QD enclosures, but I have not seen one specific to my situation, so I will start the process now.

First, I purchased 4 WD My Book Premium II 2TB units for $499 each back in 2008.

They are long past warranty but they all still work fine.  Since I know drives last maybe 5 years at best it is time to do something about them.

Since this time, 3.5 inch drives have gone from 1TB to 4TB each in size.

And I know the answer is- “This unit was not supportive of blah blah blah”, so rules Nazis please spare me the drama,

I understand that with the right tools, and linux distro you can clone, copym format move MBR ect so I am not looking for user 101 replies but I am seeking the hard tech reply.  HOW.  Not IF… HOW.

How do I upgrade these units, of which I have invesated more than $1500 and what IS the size limit due to hardware.

I would assume that proper firmware and design would have anticipated larger drives and so, what is the REAL limit not the rules manual limit for these?

And of course HOW or a good link to more info from the right hacking forum please.  Yes Yes I know this is not supported or all that jazz.  I’d would just like the answer.

Hello,

I understand your point. However, we don’t have any information about hacking the device to support bigger drives.

I know that this is not the answer that you are looking for. Perhaps any of the long time users can provide you more information about that, in case that is possible.

I would swap the bad drive out with a good one then power the device back on and it should rebuild the new drive if WD Raid works in the realm of normality.  I have not tried this so you will be the guinea pig
