WD My Passport will not mount

I’m on a MacBook Pro and use a couple of external drives to back up my music. I had a Seagate external HD fail and got this new 4tb Passport to move my info onto. It loaded on the new drive fine…but then today after rebooting my computer the drive couldn’t be found…either in the finder or on Disk Utility. WD Drive Utilities finds it…but isn’t able to scan it for problems. When I try to erase it it’ll go about halfway then stop and not advance any further.

Any thoughts on what I can do now?

I have a similar issue my 3 week old My Book is regularly disappearing from finder or not accessible. The only way I can re-access it after a period of inactivity is to actually re-start my mac. This is driving me nuts, works fine, leave the computer for an hour or three and it’s gone or giving error 36 or won’t open any images.
