I bought a WD My Passport Ultra 2TB external hard-drive in late 2014 and it worked like a charm up until about a week ago. I haven’t been able to use it on any PC running Windows (8,8.1 and 10) ever since. The drive mounts, but instead of showing the name that I hadgiven it “Whistleblower”, it shows the generic name “Local Disk (E;)” and when I click on it File Explorer stops responding. However, when I plugged the drive into my friend’s Macbook Air, it works like a charm. It also works on a Virtual Machine running Ubuntu, however when I check the properties on the VM, it doesn’t show any Filmsystem Type.
The unit’s file system could be corrupted with regards to cross-platform compatibility (Which is frequent in FAT32 volumes). Try formatting the hard drive as exFAT.
