WD My Book WDBFJK0050HBK-NESN not in file manager

I have a My Book 5 TB external drive not used for a while. Need to look at the files on it. Shows up as a device, but not in file manager and I am not prompted, when plugging it in, what to do when plugging it in (i.e., play music, copy files, open file manager, do nothing, etc.). When I look at it in device manager it says it needs a driver, but not having luck figuring out what to download from WD site to fill this need. I downloaded and installed the WD Drive Utilities but when I open it, it says to attach a supported drive.

After a minute or so, it disappears from device manager altogether.

The possible causes for such an issue can be an incompatible file system, missing drive letter, disk driver issues, damaged partition issues on the hard drive. In a worst-case, the drive itself is failing.Or else if the drive is new and never used before then the possible causes are:

  1. Faulty SATA cable
  2. When Windows unable to find an ATA device
  3. When HDD included in storage space
  4. When SATA driver is not installed or corrupted
  5. When new HDD perceived as foreign disk

You can try the below fixes to resolve the issue:

  1. Initialize the drive or drive partition
  2. Change/Assign drive letter
  3. Update Disk drivers
  4. Enable drive in BIOS
