I own the WD My Book Essential 3TB (USB 3.0) which I have connected to my WD TV Live Streaming Media Player (Gen 3).
For the past few months I’ve struggled with an issue where my My Book randomly disconnects from my WDTV even though it’s still on & the only way to fix it is to power cycle the My Book. It would happen every few hours & continued to occured even after updating the firmware.
However, its been a few weeks now & I’ve seemed to resolve the issue by standing the My Book vertically instead of horizontally. I’m not completely sure if this was the real reason for it playing up as I thought placing the My Book horizontally would have been safer though it seems to have done the trick.
I find it amazing that just by positioning the Essentials drive you got around the disconnect problem. I’ll try a few angles and distances between the drive and the WD Live streaming media player.
But my WD Live disconnects the 2Tb drive regularly so much so I can’t watch a movie. The essentials drive has been thoroughly tested and works just fine on my notebook and when directly connected to the TV.
Also the WD Live has the latest firmware (I have reset to factory defaults) and reapplied the firmware.
But to no avail. I have found the problem exists when connected to 2 different TV’s and locations.
I am now looking into the firmware of the WD Essentials drive.
Has anyone got a solution to this frustrating problem.
I had to re register under Wozza2 as the service won’t let me in on my original registration.
My guess is the problem lies with either the Essentials firmware or the WD Live firmware. I am starting down the path of updating my Essentials firmware today after I have one last go at another update to the WD Live firmware.
The latest version applied to the WD Live = 1:12:14 In the associated documentation it includes addressing
Resolved message “Unable to connect to the selected source” when accessing a NAS that was previously playing a video.
While the Essentials drive is local USB connected when the disconnect during a movie occurs you get displayed -
'Please safely eject your USB device before removing it. Choose a new content source since the orginal has been disconnected"
I am thinking of trying another of my Essentials drives to see if the same problem exists.
If changing the postion of the drive has an effect I would suspect either a bad cable or USB port. I’ve got a USB DVD drive that acts up in the normal position standing on it’s side it works. I tried different cables so suspect the USB port is bad. If the drive is connected and disconnected a lot there maybe a wear problem. Also now they use non leadbased solder and it’s not as good there are a lot of electronic failures from it.
