Recently I bought a WD My Book 2 TB external HDD which I connect to my Vaio SVE1713M1EB through USB 3.0
However when I shut down the computer with the drive connected and then start manually, it doesn’t start. It shows only the Vaio logo without loading Windows 8.
I need to shut down again (manually) then remove the drive to make it start. The curious thing is that the computer reboots normally even when the drive is connected. The afore-mentioned issue occurs only when shut down.
Please note that the possibility of the computer trying to boot from the external device is checked already and is disabled.
Besides the latest drive firmware is installed already.
It sounds like it’s not even getting to the boot from disk part?
My suggestion is to check the USB settings and experiment with the initialization/compatibility bits (Different BIOS handle it differently). There are different compatibility modes and basically I think you need to configure your BIOS not to initialize USB3 devices fully on startup.
Being a compatibility prolem, it seems more likely that your motherboard BIOS is at faut than the drive itself. You could potentially try to update the BIOS if you can’t get it sorted with the settings. Also check what USB ports are driven from the southbridge, and what are driven from a separate controller. Sometimes you’ll have a chip with additional USB ports and if this is the case you probably want to plug the drive into one of the ports driven from the southbridge.
As I said already this is configured in Bios and USB External is after HD.

Considering that the notebook is brand new let me inform you that everything is updated including BIOS. I have no idea on how to experiment with USB settings and BIOS on Win 8, therefore I’d appreciate if you provide step by step instruction on what exactly I need to do. Hopefully you noticed what I wrote in my initial message, meaning that the computer reboots normally with the device attached on USB 3. The issue occurs only when is shut down with the device also attached.
I need to add that whenever I attach the device with the computer on, I get the message that the device is downloading something which never finishes. This message dissappears when I swich to another tab.
If it’s a new computer MODEL, the BIOS was almost certainly outdated by the time you bought it. These typically change frequenctly when a model is new, it can be every couple of weeks in the initial stages.
As already indicated BIOS’s handle these settings differently, and the new UEFI Bios’s take this a step further. It’s not really possible to give you step by step instructions without having this BIOS right in front of me,
Yes, given that it works on reboot but not cold boot definately points to a power setting/issue. I’ve seen a few of these sorts of power problems before…
Thanks for your reply, however apart from the Vaio Update software which is pre-installed on my system there is nothing more to update BIOS, and I use to update my system regularly, meaning that there are no more updates to be installed.
