My WD Live failed under warranty and they shipped me the new PLUS model for a replacement. Everything works the same except the turn-on time takes about 60 seconds. It seems to go through some sort of extended boot-up cycles. I’m not sure if it’s the latest firmware or the machine itself causing this. Does anyone else notice this ?
No, it’s starting from the ground up. The 1st revision of the Live stayed in a state of standby (the kernel remained loaded and running) but it just shut down the HDMI and E-Net ports.
The 2nd revision of the Live, and all Live Plus units shut down entirely; thus it has to re-load all the modules and so-forth.
This was a requirement for some European Union thing.
I’m sorry but I don’t understand. The PLUS is exactly the same as the non-PLUS except for NetFlix. Why would the PLUS version take so much longer to boot up ? To me, it seems to take 3X as long. What’s the reason for such a long boot ?
Edit: I didn’t see the response above mine. I understand now but hey this isn’t a computer, it’s more of an appliance so I can’t see why it takes so long to start it.
That’s not true. The Live+ and the Live (2nd revision) have an additional microcontroller unit that shuts off power to everything. I think there’s also a battery in the Plus and the 2nd rev Live (probably to power the MCU and IR) They Live and Live+ also have different processors.
And you can fix it easily – just don’t turn it off (essentially you will have it in the same power state it was in the old device – a lot of folks just leave theirs on all the time, including Tony I do believe).
