Wd ex4 questions

I am thinking about upgrading to a wd ex4 and have some questions
I am thinking about buying a diskless unit and buying a wd red 4th drive will the unit work with one drive? I also want to know if there is a way to tie my 4tb cloud to the unit

Hi, the WD EX4 can be setup with one drive, there is a RAID setting called JBOD which you can use add one drive to the enclosure.

What do you mean by adding the My Cloud to the EX4?

I have a 4tb my cloud (white) I would want to connect to the new ex4 is that possible?
Also do the ex4 unit drives required to all be the same size (4tb 6th ect.) OR can it vary

Unfortunately the My Cloud cannot be directly attached to the EX 4, I mean you can have then connected on the same network and interact with both of them on the same computer, but they will need to be connected diretly to the router each with a cable.

You can have different hard drives sizes on the EX 4, you can use the drive as JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Drives) which this creates a volume for each drive inside of the enclosure.  Here is the list of compatible drives with the EX 4

the EX4 is a very slow NAS;  app development for it has historically been apathetic.

If you considering upgrading from a single drive nas to a multi drive array you’ll most likely be looking to run advanced services and features…in short

I’d recommend looking elsewhere.  Specifically Synology, QNAP, Drobo, or FreeNAS / iXsystems
