WD Elements not responding

Hi,
so i have the WD elements 1TB. The device is acting very strange since most of the time it wont be detected from any laptop/computer. I tried many different computers but the problem keeps occuring.
Now it is detected but I can do nothing with the files. I can open them and i can see the pictures (which takes very long, the drive is extremely slow), but i can’t copy anything to convert them to another drive.
It keeps giving me ‘not responding’, 'windows can not access the drive (i tried turning off virus & malware), 'scanning and repairing (tried this many times, takes much time and then says it couldnt do anything).

What should i do? I tried several USB ports but the drive is just very slow and I can’t copy any of the files.

I also tried to backup the drive from acronis but the drive does not show up there.

Hello!

There are chances that your storage drive may become corrupt or raw which makes the drive extremely slow. I would suggest you to test the drive health status through Western Digital Dashboard

Sometimes there is Windows cannot access the disk error occurs in the system. Usually, this type of error is associated with Windows Explorer, but the reasons can be improper operations, virus, or even a faulty power connection. However, to fix this problem you can try the below methods:

  • Check your drive connection
  • Change your drive letter
  • Run CHKDSK Scan

Obviously, the problem lies with the hard drive itself and not the computer you are using. Perhaps you could try using free data recovery software. However, based on what you’ve described, it seems more like signs of physical damage.

Running chkdsk is a great idea if you have file corruption due to software issues on a otherwise healthy drive.

Running chkdsk is a horrible idea if you have file corruption due to the drive being in the initial stages of hardware failure.

chkdsk is stressful enough on drives that, if a drive is starting to fail, it is a good way to get it the rest of the way to “full disk failure” in a hurry. (from a reddit user)

If data recovery tools fail, it’s best to hire a professional to recover lost files for you.
