WD Elements - falls to sleep after 15s

WD Elements Desktop Exernal 3TB 107C(?) It must be this one: WDBWLG0030HBK-EESN

I’ve had this quite a few years but over the past couple of years it falls asleep after around 15s. It is infuriating and unusable.

I cannot work from the device because if I am using software that has an autosave feature every few minutes it then has to take 20s to spin back up in order to save. If I watch a movie it stutters every minute or so as the HDD spins back up.

Has the device come to an end? Is it about to completely die on me?

I’ve tried to use NoSleepHD to write a file every 5s but that doesn’t seem to help.

Hello,

We would recommend you kindly run a diagnostic test on the drive using the following KBA article: Error

Hello Logan,

Thanks for your reply.

I’ll get this done today and report back.

The link redirected me to a newer tool (Western Digital Dashboard) but I’ve tried to run the extended test and it gets stuck at 10%, probably because the drive has fallen asleep. I’ll try that one again later.

The short test says there is nothing wrong.

Extended took around 8 hours to run and also comes up with nothing.

Any further ideas on this?
