Hi there
This seems to be a question which has been asked before but probably not quite exactly. I bought two WD Elements 5TB USB powered drives which I use for work. I keep them mirrored with the same data so that if one them fails, hopefully the other will be a backup. On these drives are high resolution imagery and large video files. I need access to these when working in Adobe applications.
Generally I only ever use one of these drives at any one time. After 11 months of usage like this, when I plug either or both of them in, they disconnect, normally after 1 or 2 minutes. I then have no option but to unplug them from the USB port and plug back in. I cannot safely disconnect as the computer at this stage doesn’t recognise them. I have tried several different USB cables and all the ports on my PC, the same thing happens every time. They disconnect regardless of whether they are idle, or if they are busy (such as trying to copy and paste folders from one place to another or uploading to OneDrive).
Yesterday a colleague gave me some videos on a 1TB Toshiba Canvio HDD. I left this running overnight uploading to the internet and ten hours later, it had done its job and was happily sitting there - idle and connected.
Can anybody suggest a solution? I have done disk checks on both and there are no reported errors. When I try to interrogate them with WD Drive Utilities, they are not even recognised by the program.
I’m tearing my hair out here!
Thanks
Jez
