WD Elements 1TB

Received new item today. Connected to laptop and started back up. After a long
while received “Did not complete successfully” and error code 0x8078012D.
Also " The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error".
I have no idea what this means.
On My Computer it says 753.97GB free of 931.48GB, but the individual files all show empty, so I don’t know if I have backed up puter or not.
Any explanation gratefully received.
VAIO laptop, W7 all up to date etc.
