WD Element drive not reconized and I need to format?

So there must have been some type of MS update that has messed everyone up cause both of my back-up elements are not being reconized and I really need what is on those drives. Remember these are my back ups so I should not have to format them cause I did this when I first bought them like 5 yrs ago. Now when I plug them in they say they are not reconized until I format them. I see that many folks out there have the same problem as I do but with no succsess other then to wipe them clean with a format and start over. But these are my back ups and I need what is on them. Can anyone help me out without saying you need to do the format?

Since both drives are affected I would be more inclined to think the problem is on the PC. Do the drives show in DiskManagement? You can try data recovery software. Recuva is a free one many others are try and buy and let youu recover a small amount. TestDisk  http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk might fix it if it’s corrupt. You can try booting from a Linux Live CD and might be able to access the drive and copy the data. Make sure you are not connecting thru a hub or using cables longer than supplied.

Yes they both show up as (status=Healthy and active). I have ran Data Lifeguard and they both PASS. I have used "EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard free edition but nothing comes back. Both of these were my main back-up drives that I use and I can not believe that they both failed at the same time ?
