WD Easystore 4TB external HDD won't work with Dell PC/Windows 7?

I bought the drive based on recommendations on Reddit.

Got it Wednesday, started setting it up. I was able to install the WD “Experience” and toolkit apps, but could not install the WD Backup software. I tried from inside the Experience program (the installation showed progress, but didn’t display “open” when finished, it went back to “install”), from the offline files on the drive itself, and from a download off WD’s site. The WD program and my PC was able to see the drive as E: . I could drag-and-drop a file from my PC to the HD, but I want to be able to use the automatic backup features.

Two hours with tech support and remote access was unsuccessful, they determined “WD Backup is not compatible with your Windows 7 computer, and its recommended to backup from Windows default backup program”

How is this NOT a basic plug-and-play situation? I’m using a basic i3 PC with Win7, not a complicated custom system.
