In older firmware releases no password was required to connect to device using a UART/Serial USB cable attached to the board. In the most recent versions a password was added and this access was blocked. The downtime and problems with the WD cloud service are very strong illustration of why local access should be left available for technical users.
WD - please reconsider releasing this password, it would help many users get their data while you resolve your security incident.
