WD Caviar Black 1TB strange "buzzing" noise

I’ve had a the drive named in the topic for just about exactly a year now and everything has worked fine until recently.

When the drive hasn’t been accessed for a while (like it’s in an idle mode or something) and i try to do something with the drive, there’s a strange “buzzing” sound for about one second and the computer freezes for about 5 seconds before i can access the drive just fine.

It’s some kind of electrical sound, and it sure doesn’t sound good.

The problem is similar to the one found in this thread:

http://community.wdc.com/t5/Desktop/Strange-noise-from-WD-black-edition-750Gb/m-p/1285#M44

but there’s no good answer in there.

Anyone know what the problem might be?

Noone? Nothing?

A bit of an update anyway. Installed Hard Disk Sentinel to monitor my disks. They report no problem at all. It watches for spinning up errors (which i suspect my problem has something to do with, since it appears when the disk hasn’t been accessed for a while). But apparently while I have the program running it doesn’t let any of my disks go “idle”. So while i have it running, the problem doesn’t appear. Go figure.

Any recommendations on any other programs? Or anyone know what the problem might be?

Since there’s been no replies, maybe you should try contacting WD’s Technical Support about this. You can do so either by phone or email.
