WD Caviar 450AA - can I easily replaced this drive with a newer model?

My internal drive has fatally crashed after 10 years faithful service. Since I don’t want to junk my very old ASUS desktop; I’m wondering if I can get a newer superior version of this drive at a reasonable price and more importantly will it be physically and technically compatible?

Any suggestions on suitable drive models and ballpark prices please?

depending on the chipset of your mobo (asus model #?) you might be able to get a small enough IDE drive (< 128gb) that will still work, such as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136457

if not, you will have to get an ide addon card that will support the larger drives used today

at that point, you mine as well get a sata card and get a sata drive

Thanks I’ll check out the web link.
