I want to buy another WD drive for storing videos, ebooks, and some other files on my computer. Additionally, I am learning video editing now, so I also need to store some video clips. But I am hesitant in choosing between a 4TB internal drive and a portable drive.
Current Storage: 1TB SSD + 512 GB HDD(old drive from my all-in-one PC)
Windows April updates caused both my desktop and laptop running Windows 11 Pro to go into a loop trying to start up. I carried my desktop to Best Buy for them to get back up and running and I was able to get the laptop back up running after a lot of work. My backups on my storage drives are what has helped my get both of them back up with all data and apps on them.
Go with the 4TB internal drive. Since you’re learning video editing you’ll appreciate the faster and more stable performance for storing raw clips and working files. Portable drives are great for backups and travel but editing directly from one can feel sluggish over time. Your current 512GB HDD is old enough that I wouldn’t trust it for important footage long term so use the new 4TB as your main storage and keep your SSD for Windows and active editing projects.
I found the WD blue disks to not last long in my studio. The Red disks are much more reliable. I keep hard disks in USB enclosures which makes it easier to manage.
