WD Black2 - Freeze - Critical Process Died

Hello everybody,

i am using a WD Black2 in a Sony Vaio VPCSA laptop, Operating System is Windows 8.1.

Installation works well, HDD works well, but a few days after it start to freeze.

This i would describe in the following way: It displays a HDD usage of 100% in Task Manager, but also a writing load of close to 0MB/s (zero). When this starts, it take a few seconds, but it seems to increase with every occurence. This happens every minute or so, it is annoying. Finally, it will get completly frozen. Then Windows come up with a blue screen, telling about the cause is CRITICAL PROCESS DIED.

I give it up to google for this, as it always end in genius guys telling you to use Windows 7 instead of Windows 8 or better buy a Mac directly.

The crazy point is, on some days the HDD can be used totally normal, no HDD 100% freeze.

Sometimes after the blue screen, it also don’t boot up and say OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND, then it need several trys and normally start up, but with lot of freeze from the beginning.

Virus scan with Windows Defender as well as Kasperky show no results.

If I use the old HDD of the laptop (a disgusting small and slow TOSHIBA) it works normal, so I doubt it is caused by the laptop?

Hello there, welcome to the community.

This behavior seems to be 1 of 2 issues, a faulty driver or corrupted OS.

I would first try scanning the drive with the DLG (WD tool to test drive) that can be found on the following link. http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=2301&lang=en

If that doesn’t show any errors I would then re-install the OS from scratch, not cloning and not using a recovery disk, but a full Windows install.

The OS was moved with the Acronis Software, which was delivered together with the drive.

I finally finish this Windows 8.1 set up, which is really pain in the **bleep**, but doesn’t matter.

Now it seemes to work little bit more smoothly.

As long as I just operate on SSD, everything seems to be fine.

But when I acces to HDD part, sometimes the error comes back.

When the error happen again (with blue screen), also the “operating system not found” show up again.

But in 2 of 3 start-ups I can use the drive normally now.

Anybody else have any idea?

Install hard disk sentinel and let us see the state of the hard drive please

In message 3 you already can see, that the DLG (WD tool to test drive) test show no error.

I tried your software as well, but shareware version only can do easy test. This was also passed successfully. But it don’t create any report?

The random seek test i also tried out. The HDD “freezes” again. 2 minutes after the test, it catched blue screen again…

Now I want to upload a picture of the random seek test and also the Sentinel Disk report, but uploading files here have no button and uploading pictures always block the “insert image” button? How to activate it?

I found it…

just connect my VPN to a country with less internet restrictions, and i can upload pictures. Crazy…

but still no options for *.txt files, so i add the report in another post.

Hope this helps the WD team. I had 3 drives die like this. Win8 has a bug that keeps the defrag scheduled task running. I found it recently while using my old normal HDD, and after deleting that task much of the thrashing went away. I’m tempted to try again on my 4th WDBlack2
