WD Anywhere Backup will not back up certain files and folders

I saw another post about this but the “reply” button was grayed out.  When backing up using WD Anywhere Backup, some folders and files are missing.  At first glance, this appears to be limited to things like empty folders and non-critical files like thumbs.db.  I searched (Google) on both of these and couldn’t find anything.  I’d like to be absolutely certain that my backup software has a good reason to ignore my desire to backup all files and folders on a particular drive.

Can anyone confirm that WD Anywhere Backup does this - intelligently chooses not to back up certain files and folders.

Thanks in advance.

Researched things a little further and in my case, the only things missing were the empty folders, thumbs.db files and tmp files.  The drive in question is a partitioned drive I created for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.  I guess I’m ok.

Today’s backup did not include the html files that were created yesterday.  Is there a way to find out what files WD Anywhere Backup automatically excludes from backup - this is kind of crazy.

Hi all,

The WD Anywhere Backup (4.50.6554).

You have 2 options.

  1. Smart Pix.  if you choose smart pix you can click on each option and it will list the file extensions supported.

  2. Local folders.  If you choose this all items in that folder will be backup with the exception of system or hidden files.  even if you have the hidden files viewable you will still not be able to back them up.

If you have files in locations other then the ones listed, you can click on Show advanced options and then remove the exclusions.  This should  correct the issue with the files you are backing up if they are in an excluded location.

Thanks for the reply James K.  Thought I had it figured out when I found the exclusion for  Temporary and Log Files (.log, .tmp, etc.) but seems to still handle html files strangely - some get backed up and some don’t.  I’ve got a work around (avoiding the use of html files).  Prefer to have software that would backup drive F (partitioned) when I tell it to backup drive F and not omit certain files.

Ya this backup software is a file folder backup.  Sounds like you need a full backup software (everything at a pointed location).  There are a few good ones out there if you trust your stuff like that to another program.  Personally the WDAB program is great for what it was intended for, but I still prefer copy past.

I used to use WD Anywhere to backup docs I used to work with but when I then started to use the PC to also conduct a lot of Photoshop and Dreamweaver work I had to resort to another backup product.  I tested scores and I settled on Altaro Oops!Backup ( http://www.altaro.com).  Great fully-automated, works great with USB and NAS drives, has great differential backup technology, keeps versions and best of all it’s really easy to use - set and forget.
