WD - 500GB USB Device not recognized

Hi -

I have a WD500 GB external hard drive - it suddenly stopped working. Every time I connect the USB cable- I get an error msg “USB Device not Recognized”.

( OS Windows 7)

I have already tried changing the USB cable, rebooted my system , tried on a different machine - same error.

I would really appreciate if any one can proivde additional troubleshooting instruction.

Thanks in advance.

MK

Hello,

Have you tried testing the drive with the WD DLG tool?

Also check on disk management to see if the drive is showing there.

How to access Disk Management in Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8 to manage hard drives

Try the drive on another system.

If it works on another computer, then there is a problem with the system registry and you may need to manually remove the registry entries for the drive.

If the drive does not work in another system, then your USB to SATA interface has likely failed (assuming it’s not the cable or the port on the computer).

You’ll need to get another USB board for the drive off ebay, or an external eSATA or USB/SATA dock (Like the Kingwin EZ-Dock), and remove the drive from the My Book and put it in there to read it OR connect it internally to the PC.
