WD 4TB BLUE not going into sleep mode

hello,

i have a new 4TB WD blue and issues with it going into sleep mode (spindown).
it is configured as drive E: and a pure DATA disk.

i replaced a 3TB WD green that had no issues going into sleep mode … it worked just fine.

i know how to setup energy saving features in windows 10 and i made sure that the system is not accessing the 4TB WD blue, preventing it from going into sleep mode.

there is no cache or swapfile on E: there is no tool accessing the drive.

again… when i replace the 4TB BLUE with the 3TB GREEN all works as expected.

the drive is a DATA drive as i wrote so it could be idle most of the time.
and i hear the annoying noise the drives motor makes.
it´s just the normal noise the motor makes but i have an absolute silent system otherwise so it is annoying.

the GREEN is a WDC WD30EZRZ-00WN9B0

the BLUE is a WDC WD40EZRZ-00WN9B0

just as info i tried a 4TB drive from WD´s main competitor and of course it worked just fine.

im pretty much clueless why this drive won´t go to sleep (spindown).

Same problem here with WD60EZRZ and no spin down
Firmware Revision: 80.00A80

WD80EZZX and Firmware Revision: 83.H0A03 is Spinning down without problem.

How to update the Firmware to fix the spin down Problem for WD60EZRZ?

How to update the Firmware to fix the spin down Problem for WD60EZRZ?

i guess there is a difference between X and Z models.
i hope WD can come up with a firmware update and this is not intentionally.

All the bare drives I have ever purchased never had a built in sleep/idle mode. Maybe the Green drive was different – to make it “greener”. Bare drives installed in PCs and enclosures are controlled for sleep by the power settings of the PC program or OS.

All the drives in enclosures I have purchased have sleep mode built into the enclosure. A requirement for me,

@mike27oct i guess you have not understood the problem cmikula and i speak about.

of course it´s controlled by the OS, as i wrote above:

the problem is, that the WD blue drives do not react accordingly.
the spindle motor is not powering down.

only when i use hdparm for windows with the parameter -Y the drives spindle motor powers down.
but that has to be done manually.

why is the spindle motor running when the drive is absolutely idle 95+ % of the time?

with my drives from WD´s competitor and the 3TB green version i can power the spindle down.
making them absolutely silent.

Check with WD Support!

yes i am in contact.

i wonder why blue drives, who supposedly have replaced green drives, have no support for advanced power management.

i must say the WD green and blue drives i bought last year are the first WD drives i bought in a decade… and so far i am not impressed. :frowning:

why would WD cripple energy saving options?

the RED drives from a friend have those APM options… ok they cost more but energy saving should be a concern and not a feature that is crippled to sell more expensive drives.
