Is there anyway to get a clean (text) MBR, so I can try to hex edit it onto my WD 2TB My Book. I had a WD 2TB My Book that Windows stopped “seeing” during a 300GB transfer (last year). I was able to use Zero Assumption Recovery to 90% of my files. The drive then failed the SMART test, so WD replaced the drive. Then the replacement drive did the same thing, only this time all recovery programs report the drive as a ZERO SIZE drive, and will not recover anything. BUT, one will let me hex edit the MBR. So what I need is a copy of a new (or working) MBR, to test my theory. (Get a good MBR and let Zero Assumption Recovery do it’s thing.)
Hello, sorry to hear that you cannot access your files. WD doesn’t offer any in house data recovery services but you can contact any of the recommended WD data recovery partners. Check the link below for more information.
That is NOT going to happen.
I was able to use Zero Assumption Recovery to get 90% of my files before this “Smartware” & Windows 2nd FAILURE. I will recovery my files again.
I have used nothing but Western Digital drives for 20+ years. But I will NEVER use the Smartware program again.
(Step 1: Aquire HEX MBR - STATUS: COMPLETED)
(Step 2: Correct I/O Error - STATUS: WORKING)
Hmmmm, should I try an SATA/USB hook-up, or build another white box?
The ASUS Z87-PRO Motherboard with 32GB of RAM looks really tasty!
Hmmmm…

…so much for WD’s “partners”!
After finding out Western Digital used the same encryption key across large blocks of chips, I bought a new My Book Essential, to swap-out the encryption board. And if it doesn’t work, I have a new 2TB drive for my white box. (And I’m not in the mood to attack the Intel Turbo 8051 core of the Inic chip with the Small Device C Compiler suite right now!) Of course, I will still buy a WD Elements Desktop [Model: WDBAAU0030HBK-NESN] 3TB NON-encrypted drive to rebuild my datacore.
Unless someone has a less than $1,000 answer?
