WD 18TB (WD181KRYZ) annoying idle sound (whistle)

Hello I just bought a WD Gold 18TB (WD181KRYZ) and it produces a whistle that I can also hear at a distance of 4-5 meters with closed computer case. It’s an annoying sound. I’ve a lot of other WD gold 12TB and 14TB and no one produces such a noise. I recorded two sounds, one recorded with x3 WD Gold 14TB (open computer case) and another recording with x1 WD Gold 18TB (open computer case).

First mp3 audio (x3 WD Gold 14TB): DropMeFiles – free one-click file sharing service
Second mp3 audio (x1 WD Gold 18TB with annoying sound): https://dropmefiles.com/rizHJ

If this is normal, can you tell me if the WD Gold 16TB (WD161KRYZ) has this sound too?
Thanks

Hi @0xdave,

Please refer to the article How To Tell If The Noise or Sound An Internal Drive Makes is Normal:

For more information please refer to the article WD hard drive makes a repeated clicking sound:

No sound a WD hard drive makes is “normal”, all thanks to their PWL (Preventive Wear Leveling) nonsense, which is nothing more than a form of planned obsolescence designed to wear out hard drives faster to boost sales.
