Warranty remedy is what? Replace controller board or just ship new drive?

Anyone know for sure:

While within the 3 year warranty period, If my My Passport Slim has a controller board failure, will WD replace the board so I can keep the data on my platters?

Or do I have to accept only an entirely different replacement drive?

You will get a replacement drive and data recovery is up to you to pay for.

Good to know.  Thanks.  The warranty doesn’t help much if all I need is a controller board swap.  I’d have to pay for that myself anyway.

Sometimes you can find a replacement board on Ebay. This link explains a little about them  http://community.wd.com/t5/Off-Topic-Discussions/Bridge-Boards/td-p/353839 That’s about the only thing I’ve figured out about them.

Yes.  I’ve found vendors for those boards and they do the firmware transfer as well.  But, I wish WD would sell me one today so I could store it for future use if needed.  Seems they could pre-flash the board.
