I recently copied 1.7Tb to the Public share on a 4TB drive. I then (in Windows 10 File Explorer) moved the files to a different share on the same Volume. All went well, but my Volume is showing a 95% usage and the Public share is showing more usage than it should. It’s like it still thinks it has the original 1.7Tb when it doesn’t.
Any ideas how I can reclaim this space?
Did you “Move” or “Copy”? If you simply dragged and dropped, that’s a copy even across shares on the same volume.
Do you have the “Recycle Bin” enabled for the share?
I made sure I “moved” the files, and also made sure there’s nothing in the recycle bin. I’m stumped.
I use a free tool called WINDIRSTAT. It will scan a drive (or share) and give you a list and a “heat map” of all the files. The bigger the square, the bigger the file. You can use it to see what’s taking up the space and where it’s stored.
Worked like a charm. Thanks.
