I thought I had seen a feature where you can press 1 and 2 on the WD Remote to control the volume of your Surround or TV via hdmi cec ??

Currently that option is not available. You can download the WD Remote app if you have an Android or iOS device to control the WDTV volume. For more information check page 176 of the manual.
