View Photos and Videos From TV

Hello,

What is the most reliable method of allowing my Sony Bravia (2020) the ability to look at my WD Ultra X2 NAS?

Thank you,
FrankCLT

Hi @FrankCLT
Have you opened a Support Case? If not opened, for more information, please contact the WD Technical Support team for the best assistance and troubleshooting:

I have multiple WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra and a Sony Bravia TV I’ve had for several years now.

I have 1 My Cloud with Plex and the other My Clouds don’t. For Plex, after installing it on the My Cloud and configuring it and adding Movies / TV Shows, then installing Plex on the TV and logging in with the same Plex account, I can see and play all the content. For the other My Clouds I access them using the VLC app installed on the TV. The app has a button for ‘Local Network’ and I click the appropriate icon for the server and can get to it fine.

Caveats: I create a user on each my cloud that has full access and use that for access through VLC. Also, in the past I had trouble with the version of the SMB protocol and off the top of my head I either turned off the old or new protocol version (SMB 1 or 2) and it eliminated the problematic extra icons that you’d chose from in the ‘Local Network’ section of VLC.

One last thing to note: Videos with uncommon video or audio codecs may not play or be shown as available to play through VLC. I went through the painstaking process to eventually re-encode older stuff to the H264 video codec and AAC LC audio codec to avoid issues (MP4 and MKV extensions). Additionally some image filetypes aren’t supported so I’ve changed those to mostly PNG or JPG. While VLC can also display images in a timed slide-show fashion, I like to use KODI installed on the TV as it seems more robust and less prone to crashing if encountering a corrupt or unsupported file. There’s some setup /configuration of Kodi to access your My Cloud that’s not as simple as clicking ‘Local Network’ like on VLC though.

Thank you…
