VIDEO_TS and VTS_01_3.VOB

I am think about purching a product to play the 100’s of movies I have on my PC’s hard drive.  I am thinking about the WD TV Play because I do not need all the features of the TV Live SMP or the Hub.  In addition to the movies I have on the PC, I will only watch NetFlix.

Most of the movies are AVI or  WMV or MKV

But a few are  in a format like this.  VIDEO_TS and  VTS_01_3.VOB.  Will the WD TV Play play this type of file or should I get the TV Live Plus.

Nop

mpeg2 is not supported

You don’t need the old Live Plus, the current Live Streaming also supports Netflix.

The live plus is only suitable for north American Netflix.

In that case it just the mpeg2 problem which could also affect your other files as the mkv / avi etc are only containers and could be encoded mpeg2.

Basically the Play revolves around internet services and you can only connect to your network via a media server which again limits the files to whatever the server is programmed to serve.

I am still confused.  One review of the WD TV Live Plus reads

"Here’s the good news for rabid downloaders: the WDTV Live plays almost any DRM-free file type. Happen to have WMV, AVI, MOV, MKV, MP4, and M4V files? No worries. Multiple audio or subtitle tracks in your files? You can switch between them. It’ll even play VIDEO_TS folders ripped from DVDs, complete with navigation. You’ll never need to transcode media files again.

But other places says that the Live Plus will NOT play Video_TS.  Is it that different generations of the Live Plus plays VIDEO_TS folders???  ,  ,  ,  :confounded:

This is WD TV Play.

Bottom line Pal:  you will not be happy with a bottom of the line player like the WD Play, because it likely cannot play or do all the things you will want it to.  You DO need the features of a WD Live SMP, so just get one, and forget about the Play, or you will be back in this forum telling us the Play can’t do this and can’t do that – we already know this, and anyone with a large collection of movie files in all formats needs a full-fledged WD Live player, and not a Play.
