I installed the smartware and activated the password option. Soon after I was no longer able to access it. It shows up in My Devices and as a CD drive in My Computer. It will not allow me to autorun it or run it. It does not autorun itself and the program that is suppose to ask me for the password doesn’t run. I have even tried it in Linux and then it doesn’t even show up. I know my password, it just won’t ask me.
Hello, inside the VCD you should be able to find the unlock icon, click on it to enter the Password. If the problem continues, you can also try to connect the My Book to another PC and try to unlock it from there.
The VCD shows up in my computer as a CD Drive, but does not autoplay. If I dbl click on it, it tells me the drive is not accessible due to an I/O error. If I right click it, it does not give me the option to autoplay. It also shows up in My Devices and in Device Manager. I can and have updated the driver, it is up to date. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers as well as the WD Smartware software, I have even tried older versions of the software. I have tried on other computers and have even gone as far as doing a complete factory restore on my laptop and still the same error comes up. I understand that the VCD is like a seperate partition that is also part of the firmware and that it is basically the entry point to the actual drive partition where my files are. I have even run the firmware updater and my firmware is up to date. I also know that on the VCD partition there is an executable program named Unlock.exe, which when run will ask me for the password. The problem I am having is that I can’t get the VCD to open or run in order for Unlock.exe to ask me for the password. It doesn’t autoplay, I can’t get it to autoplay, I can’t get it to open and I can’t get to the Unlock.exe program to run it. I have even tried to get it to run by going to Run and typing in the direct path. The drive is plugged directly into the wall socket so there should be enough power. I have read dozens of forums online and I can’t seem to find anyone that has had this exact problem.
Hi again, if you are getting I/O errors, the My Book might be having hardware problems, if possible try using another USB cable or connecting the My Book to another PC. You can also try running a test using DLG. Follow the link below for the steps.
