Using WD My Passport Essential with a DVD player

I have just bought a WD My Passport Essential 500gb HDD.  My intention was to store movies and music on it and then play theses through the USB port on my DVD player. I already do this with USB sticks, but the storage is small.

My problem is that both DVD players I have (both Samsung, but different models) are not recognising the HDD.

Is there a way to fix this?  I use an iMac with OS X 10.5.8. I have reformatted the HDD to FAT32 and this hasn’t fixed my problem either.

I’d like to know if other people have used their HDD’s in this way and if so, how they got it to work?

Thanks,

Hi dude, if your Passport Essential is formatted as FAT32 and still not being seen by your DVD players, then they are just not compatible with the unit, as the entire Essential line from WD is designed specifically for computers.

You could try a Passport AV, which WD advertises for multimedia storage and playback: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=805

You could also try a WD Elements as it is just a plain drive, but if I were you, I’d go into the Elements forum and confirm if it works with your DVDs, a confirmation would do no harm.

I hope it helps =)
