Using Smartware for backup to 4TB My Cloud

Setup everything and completed the initial backup and options are set to backup continuously.  Can I “exit” the Smartware app and will the “continuous” backup operation continue - or - do I need to leave the Smartware app running?  I see there is a “Backup Engine” active in the background with the Smartware app closed.  Thanks
