Using Google Drive Import to import a Shared Drive

I’m working on a Mac.

I regularly use the Google Drive import tool through the WD desktop app to backup my personal Google Drive. However, I have a Shared Drive that I’m also hoping to backup. I can’t figure out how to do this (or if it’s possible!)

I’ve tried to drag and drop into the MyBook from my Google Drive desktop app, but it won’t upload Google Doc files. When using the Google Drive import tool, it automatically uploads Google Docs as .docx files, which is very convenient.

Is there a way to backup the Shared Drive through the app?

The only other option I’ve thought of is downloading my Google Drive files onto my desktop and then uploading them to the MyBook. That sounds like it’s very time consuming though.

Sadly, no—at least not with the WD desktop app. It only supports backing up your personal My Drive, so Shared Drives are left out of the party. The automatic conversion of Google Docs to .docx is one of its nicest features, but it doesn’t work for Shared Drives.

Your best workaround is to download the Shared Drive from the Google Drive website, where Google will still convert Docs, Sheets, and Slides into Office files for you before you copy everything to your My Book.

It’s a bit old-school and definitely more clicking than anyone wants, but unless WD decides to show Shared Drives some love, that’s about as good as it gets.
